Books and Lists

It has been a while since I've posted. Mostly this is due to a hospital visit I undertook in early December -- I didn't volunteer, but they kept me for a while. Now I've returned and I'm on the road to recovery, and I have plenty of catching-up to do. First let me thank everyone who wished me well!

A new feature my blog and website is the mailing list. On both sites they can be found on the side panels. Please feel free to sign up. I'll be sending out a enough of the year newsletter with some upcoming news that isn't quite ready to be posted on the website or blog yet.

I celebrated the holidays by using gift cards at the local Borders superstore at Great Lakes Crossing (those who live in Michigan probably know this location well). While I was there, I was pleased to spot a few familiar titles on the shelves. So I undertook a photo expedition.

Because of the holidays, and the upcoming "gift card season," the stores are restocking. Sitting in the HORROR section were Arkham Tales, Horrors Beyond, Horrors Beyond 2, and High Seas Cthulhu. I know that Frontier Cthulhu has been shipped to stores, but I bet it will be another couple of weeks before it appears on shelves (and following that, The Strange Cases of Rudolph Pearson).

Also, prowling around, I found a few books from authors in the above mentioned books. In no particular order, I spotted a title by Paul Kemp (in HB2), Twilight Falling. Like most of the authors, Paul has several other titles. But I suspect the store is still restocking.

There is John Shirley's (in HSC & HB2) popular Demons. It one of the best books on the topic, and it only John Shirley can create demons like the ones in this two part novel (both in the same book).

William Dietz (HB2) had a number of titles, but I know a few people who had recently asked me about his Halo novelization, The Flood, so here is a photo of that. Having played Halo, I must admit I despise the creatures that make up "The Flood" (the term used for critters in the game). But I'm certain the novel brings them to life in more gruesome detail.

Alan Dean Foster (HSC) is never difficult to find in a bookstore (his books, not the man). He actually has a section label -- 'nough said. The photo is a bit blurry, but the label sticking out from the bookshelf has Alan's name on it. And pretty much the shelf below is filled with his titles.

In the end, there were too many books to chose from, so I only bought one, and hope to return at a later date -- once the restocking is complete.

Hi William! I hope that your recovery is speedy.

I saw the same Elder Signs Press books that you mentioned, in a Borders on the Magnificent Mile in Chicago. It was great to see the books on the shelves.

I have been to 3 Borders lately and none stock Ramsey Campbell books in the store! I did find 1 Campbell book today in a Barnes & Noble.

Hello Jeff,

Thanks! I'm moving right along. But I can't join in any hard physical labor for a few weeks. :) That is a shame.

I suppose I should add to my post that the Lovecraftian fiction didn't drive me insane. Rather, I simply had an everyday physical ailment. One that took quite a bit of surgery, but nothing that won't mend. :) I suppose that sounds even more mysterious.

I'm pleased that you spotted the books in Chicago! Always good to see the books getting around the country.

As for the Ramsey Campbell books, I'm not sure what's up with that. Maybe they sell very quickly so re-stocking takes a while? I know bookstores are not as fond of "horror" as they used to be. They tend to like niche markets and "unique" spins. That's doesn't explain the Campbell books, but perhaps some of the other books that should be in stores.

I didn't know you were ill. Glad you are feeling better. Man I hate hospitals. I've considered giving the Halo books a read but so far haven't. Maybe I'll try this one.

btw, I enjoyed your story very much in High Seas Cthulhu. Posted about the book on my blog.

Charles,

Thanks. Most people didn't know I was ill. :) Many suspected it in many forms, but this was a surprise.

Like you I haven't read the Halo books, but they have some great covers, and the authors are pretty good. It looks like the publisher is taking the books seriously.

And I'm very happy you liked the tale in High Seas Cthulhu. I'll have to drop by your blog to take a peek. It's been a while since I've been out on the Internet.

William,

I'd wondered why your blog hadn't been updated in awhile!
Hope you are feeling better and that you make a full recovery in time.

Scott,

Many thanks! I'm doing quite well. I hear it will take a while for my energy levels to return, but I can type! ;)
